... Should I actually be watching this soap? A soap? Apparently CBS' "As the World Turns" has been featuring a certain "power couple" that is breaking grounds: Luke and Noah. A gay couple that has a huge fanbase... one that keeps track of every kiss, angrily denouncing when there is too much time lapsed between there boys friskiness. And these aren't just gay fans either. More important... ATWT apparently is one of the few soaps who's ratings have continued to remain strong of late. Now... could this be because gay men and women are flocking to see two hotties get smoochy? Who knows! The staff room only ever had on All my Children, but maybe I'll give in and try out this show. At least during the NUKE (that's right, they have a ship name) scenes?
Here's there first kiss... context (Hah, I did a lot of reading at work when I was bored): Luke's teh gay. He had a friend Kevin that he'd fallen in love with, but Kev was straight and a homophobe. So when Noah arrived, Luke was like "I'm falling for a straight guy, ew" and Noah was dating one of his bff. They had a slightly flirty little encounter at one point, which Noah brushed off as nothing. Then Noah's dad comes into town and he wants to go on a lunch thing with Noaher and his gf. So Luke is helping him get ready... and scene....
I rage at the little things, so that the big things don't seem so bad.
When updating your Facebook status, is it really so difficult to form complete sentences? Or how about just something that sounds coherent? Yes you are forced to being with your name, but after that sky is the limit. Even if you want to be constrained by the "is", there are ways to express oneself without coming across as a fool.
For instance:
Marie is Jenks... should be Marie is at Jenks. Not that hard to add the extra "at" to make it all flow so much nicer. Alternatively Marie is going to Jenks.
Considering I have to read / trudge through numerous english texts and poems in my quest to finish this degree, I figured that maybe I can add another use to all this enforced reading. Beyond just doing it for the grade, of course. Each Thursday, I am going to hopefully find something that I really liked reading and share it here. Might be a passage from a larger book, might be a poem, might be a part of an essay that I found funny... who the hell knows. Sky's the limit with this one, folks.
Without further adieu... entry # 1 in the literary troves...
--- And when you have forgotten the bright bedclothes on a
Wednesday and a Saturday,
And most especially when you have forgotten Sunday ---
When you have forgotten Sunday halves in bed,
Or me sitting on the front-room radiator in the limping afternoon
Looking off down the long street
To nowhere,
Hugged by my plain old wrapper of no-expectation
And nothing-I-have-to-do and I'm-happy-why?
And if-monday-never-had-to-come--
When you have forgotten that, I say,
And how you swore, i something beeped the bell,
And how my heart played hopscotch if the telephone rang;
And how we finally went in to Sunday dinner,
that is to say, went across the front room floor to the ink-spotted
table in the southwest corner
To Sunday dinner, which was always chicken and noodles
Or chicken and rice
And salad and rye bread and tea
And chocolate chip cookies---
I say, when you have forgotten that,
When you have forgotten my little presentiment
That the war would be over before they got to you;
And how we finally undressed and whipped out the light and flowed
into bed,
And lay loose-limbed for a moment in the week-end
Bright bedclothes,
Then gently folded into each other---
When you have, I say, forgotten all that,
Then you may tell,
Then I may believe
You have forgotten me well.
- "when you have forgotten Sunday: the love story", Gwendolyn Brooks, 1981
I am admittedly a little apathetic towards this year's Election. I am still bitter, honestly, about how everything turned out. I really believed that my candidate should have won... though the argument about her being unable to handle her election campaign holds some ground. But anyway... I already know how I'll vote. The exciting part was during the primaries... now it's like "Ok, I am going to vote Obama, because I won't vote McCain." I feel kinda deflated that I get no excitement out of voting, like I had when Gore was running or even Kerry. But ... rockthevote, as always, continues to try and make sure that as many youth as possible participate within the election. This year they've teamed up with the Peanuts organization... http://www.peanutsrocksthevote.com/. Now there's an election I can get behind! So far Snoopy has managed to take my homestate of New Jersey... go puppy dog, go!
August 12, 2008 10:35 AMWhy I like Olympics, Part 1
Now, don't get me wrong. I get all giddy when the Americans pull out victories and find myself loudly cheering for every prelim or final event. Last night, I was messaging friends and family alike, yelling at them to turn on their televisions to watch the Men's Gymnastics Squad defy odds and sequester a Bronze Medal. But in events where we don't have a chance, where our athletes have long ago been eliminated, I admittedly will find myself cheering for the underdog. There is something special about a nation sending just one or two athletes and then that athelete, defying expectations, rising to the challenge and securing a medal. I will cheer on Americans, but without them leading the pack, I will most definitely take time to cheer on individuals who are bringing home the glory for their nations.
Take for instance Benjamin Thomas Boukpeti of Togo. Taking part in the Men's Single Kayak Event, Boukpeti was ranked near the bottom (16th). Nothing was expected of him. However, as the races began, the reigning Gold and Silver medalists, argueably the best kayakers in the world, found themselves dropping behind and out of contention. Boukpeti surged forward to secure a Bronze medal, effectively making him not only the first medalist in his nation's history, but also the first African to secure a medal in this event. As he crossed the finish line, the crowd were already keyed into this accomplishment and began chanting "To-Go, To-Go". That my friends, is what the Olympics is all about.
August 11, 2008 08:25 PMThe Hotness at the Olympics: Finchum and Boudia
Well, my men's synchronized divers' may have only ended up getting 5th... but that doesn't detract from their adorableness. These two hotties not only have an amazing body, but aww... they're best friends. At 19, I think they at least have one more Olympics in the future for themselves... and we still have singles diving, right? Go gettum boys.
Dave should like it just for the Mythbusters... but me... it's the cutie who loves arachnids :) Bear Grylls, together we can take on the wild and kick its ass!
However... I must say that the Visa Olympics commercials have been rocking v. hardcore. (The Coke Commercial with the Special Olympics is up there as well!)
