What the fuck, 2008?!
You keep celebrating your bright new day, I'll keep looking at this year and wondering where things are going so terribly wrong for the LGBT community in this country. President Elect Obama announced his choice for invocation at his inauguration this year: Rick Warren, author of
A Purpose Drive Life. The pastor is a huge support-- Oh wait, no he isn't. In fact, he doesn't support gay rights at all (or women's rights for that matter). Obama, the great uniter, seems to be reaching out to the evangelist crowd and saying "Come, come join the party." The gays however, oh woe be the gays. We get Prop 8 shoved down our throats and NO NO NO comment from our President-Elect. Now, he has the choice of any religious leader in this nation and he picks one who is absolutely against any of our causes. And you tell me, It's ok, Brian. He represents you. Really? Does anyone in the community feel like we are being tossed under the bus here? But wait, it gets worse...
The United Nations went to vote yesterday on a Resolution that would denounce Gay-Laws through the World. Now, this resolution has no binding power. UN Peacekeeping forces won't rush into nations and fight for the gays. They won't protect anyone from being beat or killed or hung for the sexual orientation. It will just say, "Tsk, Tsk, Your behavior is atrocious." The thought is there however.
Taking this into mind, realizing that this is mearly a symbolic gesture, the United States refused to back the resolution. They REFUSED to condemn Gay-Bashing and hatred and bigotry and murder. REFUSED. The gave a legal reason, stating that this would somehow effect state rights (you know, those states where landlords are still allowed to boot people from their homes cause they are gay). Of course, how a NONBINDING, NON LEGISLATIVE, SYMBOLIC resolution could affect state rights is a wonder.
Where do I live anymore? What the fuck is happening all around me?! This is fucking nuts.
