Today, Iceland's Parliamentary body (The Althingi) voted in favor of extending marriage equality to LGBT citizens. Of course, Iceland is the only nation that also has an openly gay head of government. If it wasn't for those volcanoes, it might actually be a nation I'd want to visit! Joining with Portugal this year, Iceland now becomes the 9th nation to allow LGBT individuals to marry. The others are the Netherlands (2001), Belgium (2003), Spain (2005), Canada (2005), South Africa (2006), Norway (2008), and Sweden (2009).
* The New York Times had a nice editorial as the final arguments are being prepared in California's Prop 8 Trial.
With Pride in full swing in June, our government is jumping in on the act. President Obama released a press announcement that acknoweledged the month and called for the end of prejudice based upon sexual orientation (and of course, prejudice in general). What is more interesting was that Secretary Clinton's State Department actually has a small website dedicated to LGBT Pride Month: They highlight staffers who identify as LGBT within her staff. It's nice to get some sort of recognition, yes?
So the message I get from this song is that one should never invite Shakira over to their house. Well, at least don't do it if you're the same size as her... "Or she might steal your clothes if they fit me". Regardless, she also won't make agreements, just like a gypsy. Those rascals.
Did I mention that boyfriend prospect, Rafael Nadal is in the video? Oh, did that just give people a reason to watch?
